1885 was the first year of publication for "Sechrist's Handbook and Railway Equipment and Mileage Guide", later known as "The Official Railway Equipment Register". Its purpose was to provide 'a uniform equipment list and reference book for the Interchange of cars.' The first issue was missing a number of railroads and lacked much information on length and capacity, but subsequent issues were more detailed.

The goal of this website is to provide more detailed roster information from the 1850s to 1888, including listing published photos and drawings. Some of this information is undoubtably lost to time, but enough remains to make the attempt worthwhile.
Additions and corrections are welcome.
